Generally, the job of a Business Banking Relationship Manager is to develop relationships with small business clients. He or she helps clients to manage their cash flow and obtain financing for growth. He or she also provides financial solutions and promotes the products of the bank.

The role involves extensive relationship development and operational expertise. The relationship manager has to evaluate the needs of the client and create a solution that meets these needs. He or she may consult with a product specialist to structure a transaction.



The relationship manager also has to maintain the credit quality of the portfolio. He or she must be aware of all types of risks and must follow policies and procedures. He or she must also be open to sharing ideas and elevating concerns. He or she must work within the Bank's risk appetite and must adhere to its guidelines.

The Relationship Manager identifies business opportunities and solicits referrals from external sources. He or she then works with the product specialist to ensure that the customer's needs are met and the relationship is profitable. He or she also supervises the team members' business development activities. He or she establishes objectives for each relationship and sets a call schedule for the team. He or she mentors the team members.

The Relationship Manager must have a strong knowledge of the industry and the company. He or she must be able to provide responsive, quality service. He or she must also maintain a close partnership with other lines of business.
